Trīssimt gadus pēc tam, kad kaŗš un mēris padzina cilvēci no Zemes — to izglāba baltiešu izsūtītie Mēness kolonijā —, trīspadsmitgadīgs zēns, viņa desmitgadīgā māsa un pazuduša zvaigžņu kapteiņa dēls atrod pēdas no civilizācijas, kas iznīcināja sevi, tiekdamās uz zvaigznēm.
Three hundred years after war and plague drove humanity off Earth — saved, improbably, by Baltic deportees in a Moon colony — a thirteen-year-old boy, his ten-year-old sister, and the son of a vanished star-captain uncover relics of a civilization that destroyed itself reaching for the stars. Summoned by the dead world's mad caretaker-machine, the three children fly into the mouth of the ship that swallows ships — where a song, a grandmother's amber, and a girl's impossible act of trust must decide the future.
Written in 1978 by Vidvuds Beldavs, Māra un Māris uz Marsa is one of the first Latvian science-fiction novels — a family adventure with a dissident soul, where dainas are navigation, a dowry chest flies, and the villain is weaponized care.

A boy on a red dune watches a star become a rocket — his father coming home with a secret from Ceres: “Ceres was once inhabited!” That night two mineral cylinders flare furnace-red on the living-room floor, and something small with oval feet drills through the bubble-house wall — leaving footprints that stop dead in untouched sand.

Māru nolaupa olbūtnes — laipnas olveida būtnes, senās Dainavas civilizācijas pēcteči. Dziļi pazemē vecā Zīle, burtniece no Mēnesspils, viņu izved brīvībā ar lidojošu pūralādi — cauri smadzeņakmeņu dārzam, kur kristāli atbild uz dziesmu.
Māra is taken by the olbūtnes — courteous egg-beings, descendants of the lost Dainava civilization. Deep underground, Old Zīle rides her flying dowry chest with Māra through the brain-stone garden, a crystal forest of the ancient Martians that rustles awake and sings along: «Caur sidraba birzi gāju, ne zariņa nenolauzu.»
III · Vētra / The Storm
Cilindru drudzis pārņem Saules sistēmu; tanki ielenc Nītauri; pamostas Zirneklis — zvaigžņu kuģis, kas aprij kuģus. Pasaulkuģa Spīdolas Dziesmotavā dziedātāji atbild kapteinim: «Brauciet pāri pasaulēm pašā rata viducī.»
Cylinder fever sweeps the system; tanks ring the village; the Zirneklis wakes — the star ship that swallows ships. In the Song-Hall of the worldship Spīdola, beneath the naked Milky Way, the singers answer the captain in daina verse: “Sail above the worlds, through the very hub of the wheel.” Three children take a lifeboat into the lamprey mouth.
IV · Izvēle / The Choice
Kuģa dziļumos, pusmiljonu gadu vecā vadības telpā, deviņas pogas atņem Gādniekam — mašīnai, kas prot tikai gādāt — viņa varu. Pēdējā poga sola iznīcību. Māra piespiež dzintaru pie pieres… un nospiež pogu.
In a dead control room half a million years old, nine buttons strip the Caretaker — the machine that only knows how to care — of its senses. The last button promises annihilation. Māra presses her grandmother's amber to her forehead… and presses the button. And the bomb is a key: out of black-hole fire rises an amber sun, the bee inside it grown vast — Laima, lawgiver of Dainava, keyed to fire only for a living hand that chooses against all reason.

First told as bedtime stories to the author’s children, then written down in 1978 with original illustrations by Ēriks Purkalītis, the novel is presented here restored from the author’s own manuscript — its pre-war orthography intact — with a facing English translation. Purkalītis’s hand-drawn originals are collected in the appendix of the book.
The new colour imagery on this site is not his: it comes from the 2026 trailer and was created by Zintars Beldavs, the author’s son, working with Claude (Anthropic’s AI) and other AI tools — and it grew from Purkalītis’s hand-drawn world: 1970s retro-futurist optimism crossed with Baltic folk material culture.
Inheritance is the hero of this book: the amber bee, the dowry chest, the dainas — every climax-solving tool is something handed down. The solar system is saved by a birthday present.
